Musica Viva:

Missing music

Is the music missing from one of the pages at Musica Viva? There may be two reasons for that:

Corrupted files

There must be close to a million files at Musica Viva, so statistically a few of them are bound to be corrupted or gone AWOL. If you think that is the case, email me at frnordbe@online.no and I'll try to fix it as soon as I can. Remember to tell me what page and what piece of music that is missing!

Ad Blocking

A more likely reason is that your computer has Norton Ad Blocking installed and running. This is a program that is supposed to remove advertisements and commercial links from web pages you are visiting. This might seem like a great idea, but there are some major disadvantages. I won't go into detail here - the internet is crammed with furious discussions about the topic and it seems they'll never agree. ;-)

But what is important here and now, is that Norton Ad Blocking does an extremely lousy job.
Think of it this way: I'm sure you have an email account, and it probably includes a spam filter to stop all the junk mail (if not, you ought to get one). Imagine that your spam filter let lots of junk mail through but blocked emails from your friends. Would you still use it?
In essence that's how Norton works. It lets lots of advertisements through and removes lots of "non-commercial" content from the web pages.

For some weird reason the Ad Blocking has decided that the sheet music graphics at Musica Viva are advertisements and won't let you view it. So if you want to view the Musica Viva sheet music you'll have to turn off the Ad Blocking. I don't use the program myself, but I've been told it's quite simple: Just open Norton Internet Security options, go to Ad Blocking and turn it off. You may also have to clear your internet cache if you want pages you've already tried to view.

But...

Just to avoid any misunderstanding turn off the ad blcoker only, not Norton Security altogether. Norton Security also includes virus protection and a firewall and you definitely want to have both of those if you surf the web with a Windows computer. Norton's virus protection is an average quality anti-virus program although (like all Norton software) rather clumsy and very slow. You might want to replace it ito increase your computer's speed, but don't venture out on the internet without virus protection!
The firewall isn't Norton's at all. It's just something they "borrowed" and added to the package. A perfetly good and useful piece of software.
